We’re not the new kids on the block.

We are a family owned business in Adelaide, Australia with over 45 years technical experience in servicing the humble appliance – so we know our stuff.

It’s 1981 and a 17-year-old boy, fresh out of high school, is looking for his first job and to forge a career.

His name is Chris Ktoris, and little does he know he is about to embark on a journey that will become his passion. He lands a job as a junior technician at ‘Mr Dishwasher’ fixing dishwashers, which at the time were a very prestigious and sought-after item.

He rapidly developed a loyal customer base with his thorough and meticulous servicing in addition to the suite of products he developed (Power Of 4) to achieve the best results for the customer and the longevity of the machine.

He quickly realised that the key to a successful business was exceptional customer service.

In 1974, Mr Dishwasher introduced Miele to Australia (importing the first Miele products into the country). Four years later, in 1978, Miele entered the Australian market (in Melbourne) off the back of the foundation laid by Mr Dishwasher. Soon after Chris’ employment, he became Australia’s premier Miele service technician based here in Adelaide.

Fast Forward to 2021, and Chris is the Managing Director of a successful business with the foundation set to launch into the future.

The latest chapter started in 2016.

Based in the 100m2 showroom in the CBD where the business had been located for the past 30 years, the decision was made to move to a bigger location.

At the time, there were two ASKO and three Miele ovens on the showroom floor that were more for decoration than anything else. The business was driven by replacement Dishwasher, Washing Machine and Dryer sales but it was understood that the future demanded an evolution into the cooking space.

After countless conversations with suppliers, councils, property managers, real estate agents, investors, stakeholders, staff and family, the decision was made to move into a 1500m2 property with over 1000m2 of dedicated showroom space.

The name “Adelaide Appliance Gallery” was born, and the fully interactive ‘Gallery’ style showroom was developed. Without the support of foundation partners such as ASKO, Miele, NEFF and Laurastar, it was just a pipedream that would not have eventuated.

New members of staff joined the family who specialised in cooking to compliment the strengths of the team already there.

If you build it, they will come… and that they did.

With the success of the foundation partners, other suppliers could see the value and started approaching. The introduction of Falmec and Falcon increased exposure and an ever-broadening customer base. Market share was increasing, and new demographics were being reached. This led to an unannounced visit and invitation to become a ‘Designer Appliances’ store as a flagship of the BSR group.

This marked the beginning of the new normal.

Over the past 18 months, new suppliers have been introduced into the business such as SMEG, Fisher & Paykel, Electrolux and Liebherr. New demographics of customer are being attracted by the quality of appliance on display (functioning and interactive) and the bespoke design of the ‘gallery style’ showroom.

Cooking experience sessions are booked out, offering customers insights into the latest technology and trends.

Strategic alignments with Designers, Architects, Builders and Decorators give a unique and immersive opportunity for customers to ‘design’ their full kitchens. Corporate events are being hosted onsite providing a memorable experience for guests.

The showroom has been completely re-generated and there are commitments from more suppliers to be announced shortly.

Staff numbers are increased, and infrastructure investments are made to keep up with demand.

With all the noise and distraction of growing it’s easy to drop the ball, but one thing remains constant.

Exceptional customer service is not negotiable.

It’s 2022 and a 17-year-old boy has come a long way, but the story is only just beginning.

Stay tuned for the next chapter.
