So many irons to choose from – how do I find the right one?

Features to look out for in irons

Studies conducted in the past years have surprisingly shown that we spend around four months of our lives ironing our clothes. Oddly interesting yet equally terrifying, particularly when considering our plans to travel the world instead of maintaining a good housekeeping persona, it pays to find the right iron that can cut down on time spent performing this necessary yet annoying chore. Irons are a huge part of what we do here at Adelaide Appliance Gallery and we have a fully functional ironing space in our showroom for you to try out.

If you’re going to be spending four months of your life with an iron in hand, you might as well make sure that it’s a functional and enjoyable unit that you can appreciate so here are some of the main features to bear in mind

Types of irons

Steam irons are ideal for when you have a small load of laundry to do, as they are able to moisten and stretch out the fabric, removing any creases that might have happened during the drying process. Of course, you have the option of steam generator irons as well, meant to produce twice as much steam as usual –great for removing stubborn creases. Our staff in our Adelaide Appliance Gallery Showroom will be more than happy to show you how these irons work.

Design

When it comes to design, you can opt for a corded or cordless unit. Especially if you are prone to travelling or don’t always find yourself near a plug socket, this design option might help you get through the day while still having smooth and perfect-looking clothes. While we’re on it, an iron with a retractable cord makes storage simpler, especially if you only tend to use it once in a while.

For left-handed individuals, consider the option of a pivoting cord, as lefties usually attest that they are more comfortable and more well-balanced. Additionally, bear in mind that a steam iron can always be used as a dry iron, but not the other way around.

Programmes

As a general rule of thumb, the ability to gently mist clothes with a water spray is a primary characteristic of all irons, but it’s still worth having a look before making a purchase. Other products are equipped with a safety shut-off, which adds another element of security, particularly important in families with young and restless children. Similarly, the automatic shutoff is a handy feature which turns off the iron if you leave it on for too long or should it tip over.

For clumsy adults, non-stick plates are the way forward, as you won’t risk burning off any of your clothing items should you watch your favourite TV programs while.  Another feature that makes cleaning simpler is the anti-scale option, stopping limescale from inevitably building up –ultimately preventing damage to your iron and meaning that you won’t need to constantly purchase products which may or may not work.

We can go through these features with you in our Adelaide Appliance Gallery Showroom.

If you’re looking for an iron that can make light work of large piles of ironing than a steam generator might just be the answer to your prayers. Being able to hold around three times as much water as a regular steam iron these light alternatives will make your life easier, as you won’t need to refill them as often.
